The Dirt (comments I found on the net)
-I did a whois check on my domain about a week ago and it said that there were 942 domains hosted on the server that I am on. I think that is a little excessive. So I do not recommend them. Maybe this is one bad experience out of hundred, I don’t know, but all of the resellers on the server that we share are down so there has to be other people that are unhappy.
-HostGator is good for php, and seems to have reasonable support. I wouldn’t recommend them for Ruby on Rails, however, as they only support fcgi
-Not too many free addons or extra features
-4.95 per month for 3 years or 8.95 per month + 5.00 service fee
Are You Freakin’ Kidding Me?
You gotta pay an extra service fee if you want a monthly plan? It’s either that or commit to 3 freakin’ years! I haven’t been married that long!

I’ve only been with HostGator for a couple months and I haven’t had any problems. My site is always live, and I think the 99% uptime they boast is a true statement. I called tech support when I first bought my domain and host package and they were extremely helpful, and like you mentioned they are 24×7 which is a plus. The prices are very competetive also. The package I have is Baby Gator, which is 600GB disk space, 6000GB bandwidth and unlimited domains for $7.95/mo. Like I said, I’ve only been with them a couple months, but so far so good…

Mikey,
Did you have to pay any fees to get that rate? How long did you have to sign up for? Glad to hear customer service is at least good, unlike Goddaddy hosting sucks.

I’ve never had a problem with hostgator support - they are a lot better than mediatemple - thats for sure. I run several blogs on one hostgator account - and it works great. If you want to have your own IP you can have it added to that account for pretty cheap.
