Chrome - Google is Now Your New Internet Host

Filed under: Google Web Hosting, Google hosting, Internet Browsing

Well, the indomitable Google has taken one more step to becoming the ultimate internet experience. Not only does it do mail, web hosting, blogging, news, finances, personalized web pages, etc. etc. etc… I could go on. Now, it has come out with its own web browser to make sure your internet experience is entire google. No longer just a search bar on the top of other browsers - Google is now browsing.

Is google going to take over the world? Maybe. Maybe not. I think it’s going to at least take over the internet. Imagine if not only the sites that you go to are dominated by google - search, check; adsense, check - but the way you view the website will as well. It’s a little insane and a little scary.

That being said, I downloaded Google’s Chrome, and here are my thoughts:

The Good

-it loads FAST!
-it’s a squeaky clean display - streamlined and simple to use
-it’s mostly intuitive
-opening up a few sites takes up much less RAM memory than firefox

The Dirt

-opening up a bunch of tabs takes up a whole lot of memory - more than firefox even. The reason for that is each tab is an instance of the web browser - meaning, it’s like opening up a new browser with each site, which can get pretty memory intensive
-if you don’t have enough memory, it becomes really really slow
-it doesn’t display all the webpages properly
-it doesn’t have any addons yet (though I’m sure these will be forthcoming soon)
-some of its buttons aren’t extremely intuitive and you have to do a little bit of searching to find some stuff
-I wish you could edit the home page

All in all, I think Chrome is a very promising browser. I’m typing this using firefox mostly because of the memory issues, as I like to have up to 10 tabs open at once, which really kills the speed.

I can think of one last thing Google doesn’t do - games. Why no Google games? Oh yea, and google’s web hosting isn’t great either.
